Twittering and Indeterminate Anti-Pop: Talan MemmottTitle: Twittering Twittering is a playable textual instrument, remixing audio, video, poetic text. Indeterminate Anti-Pop in autoplay text and audio sequencer constructed in Flash. Twittering is an interactive textual instrument that twitters. But, nothing happens unless you engage with it… Unless you twitter yourself. The textual instrument is based (loosely) on the novel my molly departed (forthcoming i.e. Press). The instrument may be played using the keyboard, through an alternative input device (x-Key Joystick), and is also amenable (for performance and installation) to motion tracking. As such the piece is portable and interoperable and can be demonstrated in different spaces, in different cultural contexts. As a “player” plays the instrument the work is programmed to delay responses. In this way, one can play the piece quickly and then listen to (and watch) what has been constructed through the interaction. Indeterminate Anti-Pop is a super-messy mashup of sounds, images, and text. Once the application is started a somewhat awkward pop song emerges along with analogous texts and images. The piece is constructed in Flash and tests the limits of its ability to manage the 230 external audio files and images, and how this sort of overburdening effects metric or musical time. |
